Living in the hyper-paced society we are currently immersed in, it becomes more and more essential that we slow down and take the time to contemplate the immense natural cycles, such as the struggle of growth and decay, the slow shifting of elements of landscape, or the seasons – systems that we must not forget we are all a part of – the cycles of which we came, and to which we will return.  My subtle works strive to supply such a space through a combination of painting, drawing, print, collage, installation, sculpture, audio and video. This interdisciplinary approach to art making originates from the desire to investigate the same idea, of locating the self within the ever-changing systems of nature that surround us, through multiple sensory experiences.

In the body of work I am currently working on (move through weather), I have been working closely with the concept of weather systems.  I am attracted to their amorphous shapes, the way energy is made visible and transferred through them, as well as their constant movement and change.

Often incorporated into my studio practice is the use of what I refer to as process sculpture.  Most often the use of this sculpture (which may even take the form of audio or video works) is for taking a 2-demensional painting idea and manifest it in a new material to hopefully gain a new understanding or insight through the transfer of media, in addition to bringing studio practice in line with the very transitions in the landscape that I am exploring.

I apply mark as a record of time.  Echoing the fleeting present, I make marks with the knowledge that they will be most likely be erased, dissolved or painted over throughout the course of the painting. This negotiation shows through in the final image as residues or stains of dissolved paint, as well as atmospheres created through veils of subsequent layers of pigment.  Creating these works has become a struggle to make implicit the temporary nature of existence – a locating or navigating of oneself while coming to terms with living in a state of constant change and decay, a world which forces continue independently from the will of any individual part.
